Cornhusker State Games

The Cornhusker State Games started Friday evening. Unfortunately there is an incredible heat wave here right now but it hasn't dimmed the enthusiasm of the athletes competing in volleyball, trap shooting, ping pong, softball, fencing, soccer & lots of other events. I stopped by to watch a bit of a fast pitch softball game. I was lucky & could enjoy the game from a shady spot.

Earlier this week I was walking the dogs & passed by this neighborhood flower garden. This home sits on a corner lot & she has filled the space between the sidewalk & the curb with perennials. They are all blooming right now. A few, like the bee balm, a bit past their prime. But it is still a spectacular display . . .

Mike's family

While on our last trip to visit Herb, we also took the opportunity to have lunch at the Black Horse Inn in Creighton. Don's cousin, Mike, & his family joined us. Mike's six year old daughter, Kattyann, was being very patient while we ate & when I suggested we go outside so I could take her picture I didn't have to ask twice. She is so cute & I love her long braids. Before they all took off, I got her folks, Mike & Lenore in some photos & also Mike's mother, Lois. Mike & his family head off to China this fall where he & Lenore will be teaching. What an adventure! They were most recently in Libya. Brunswick clothespins

I haven't found much opportunity to photograph clothespins so far this summer. When we were up to visit Herb, his neighbor had rugs drying on the clothesline. It didn't look like anyone was home so I took two steps into their yard . . .

Gavin's Point Dam

While driving around the country on Saturday we made our way to Gavin's Point Dam on Lewis & Clark Lake. I'd never been there before but it is quiet the lake/park/recreational area. The water being let through the dam was spectacular. Don & Herb spent time watching the large fish jostling around in the water.

Don & I visited Herb this past weekend. For something to do the three of us drove up to Niobrara State Park. We found the highest point & observed the Missouri River flooding its banks. Highway 12 east & west of the city of Niobrara was closed, but we did not observe any flooding in Niobrara.



This is an old train bridge we hiked to within the park. A posted sign said the trail was closed due to flooding but Don & I disregarded the sign. The water was high but was not flooding the trail. We did not go on the bridge though & did heed the "keep out" sign.











We stopped for gas on the Santee Reservation & these sand bags were lined up on highway 12. We were east of Niobrara & the portion of closed highway.
